Early Ice Precautions: Navigating a Warm Winter for Safe Ice Fishing

Hello again, fellow adventurers! It’s Max from Burley Outdoors, here to share some crucial tips for early ice fishing, especially in a season as unpredictable as this one. Danielle and I have been eager to hit the ice, but Mother Nature has been throwing us some curveballs with this exceptionally warm winter.

1. Adapting to Unpredictable Conditions

  • This Year’s Challenge: We’ve been facing thinner ice than usual. Just yesterday, we finally found a bay with about 5 inches of ice – just enough to fish safely. But remember, some lakes are still showing open water.
  • Regular Checks are Key: We’re constantly on the lookout for safe spots, using our Eskimo spud bars to test ice thickness. It’s all about adapting to what the season brings.

2. Gear Up for Safety

  • Rapala Ice Picks: These are lifesavers. I keep mine ready at all times, and so should you.
  • Float Suits for the Win: I’m bundled up in my Eskimo float suit, while Dani rocks her DSG suit. Not just for warmth – these are crucial for buoyancy in case of a fall-in.
  • Traction is Important: We always wear ice cleats. A simple slip can lead to disaster on uncertain ice.

3. The Buddy System in Action

  • Always Together: This season, having a buddy is more important than ever. Dani and I never hit the ice solo.
  • Communication is Crucial: Keeping our phones charged and within reach is a must, especially with the variable conditions.

4. Emergency Preparedness

  • First Aid and Plans: Our first-aid kit is always stocked, and we always let someone know our plans – where we’re going and when we’ll be back.

5. Reading the Ice

  • Watch for Weak Spots: This warm weather means extra caution around usual danger zones like river mouths and springs.
  • Visual Checks: We’re always on the lookout for cracks or pressure ridges – clear signs to stay away.

6. Proceed with Caution

  • Take it Slow: We’re moving more cautiously than ever, testing as we go. The ice is less predictable this year.

7. Respect Nature

  • Leave No Trace: We make sure to leave the ice as pristine as we found it. Everything we bring in, we take out.

This season at Burley Outdoors, safety is more crucial than ever. The thrill of ice fishing is unmatched, but this warm winter reminds us of the respect we must have for nature and its unpredictability. Stay prepared, stay safe, and here’s to finding those perfect spots with just the right thickness of ice.

Keep following us for more updates from our winter adventures. Remember, the great outdoors is for everyone to enjoy, but always with a sense of responsibility and care. Tight lines, and here’s to a safe and successful season on the ice!
